The dunes are a real wonder in Sardinia. They are particularly imposing in Pistis, Arbus, Scivu but especially in
Piscinas which is a small area located on the western coast of the island, in the municipality of Arbus, on the stunning
Costa Verde (Green Coast).
The Piscinas area is a true Sahara-like desert formed by the impressive golden dunes, high up to about sixty meters. The stripe of dunes is wide several kilometers and it stretches along the stunning Green Coast.
The beauty created by the contrast between the desert-like environment with high dunes made of golden sand and spotted with bushes and olive trees that form small groves and the blue-green color of the endless sea will leave you breathless! The creator of this beauty is the Mistral wind, which blows on the sand and creates new shapes every day.
What may seem strange, that although the hostile conditions, the vegetation is able to grow here: in fact, many plants, shrubs, flowers, and trees such as junipers, mastic trees, sea lily, sea daffodils, and others grow in this arid, desert area.
Left behind the dunes, you will get to the wonderful, 7 kilometers long golden-sand beach of
Green Coast. It is a small paradise: the beach is never crowded, the sea is rather deep after the first steps featuring pristine, crystal clear waters and a sandy seafloor rich in marine life.
What to visit nearby:
Guspini is a nice town in the hinterland, at the foot of Monte Santa Margherita. Here, you can visit the late Gothic-style Church San Nicola of Mira and the Romanesque-style Church Santa Maria of Malta built in the 10th century. In the nearby area, there is also an interesting archeological site, where the ancient Phoenician-Punic city called "Neapolis" (pic n°4) was built in the 5th century B.C., and also, about 30 Nuraghe, the typical Sardinian structures are scattered. Here, you can read more about
Nuraghe.
Montevecchio is an old village of mines where galena and sphalerite used to be extracted (pic n°5). They closed in 1991 but once these mines were among the most productive ones in Europe. Today you can visit these historic mines and realize how the miners' lives looked like once.
Ingurtosu is another mining village with the zinc medieval mines and where to visit as well the old mining wells.
